Dr. Philip M. Tierno Jr. has served on the Airborne Medical Advisory Board since 2006. He has 35 years of experience in clinical and medical microbiology. He is director of clinical microbiology and diagnostic immunology at Tisch Hospital, New York University Medical Center, and an associate professor of the Departments of Microbiology and Pathology at the New York University School of Medicine, NYU College of Dentistry and SUNY School of Optometry in New York.
He is a New York City Mayor's Task Force on Bioterrorism and the New York City Medical Reserve Corps. In 2005, he was awarded the Il Leone de San Marco Award for lifelong achievement in science and medicine.
Dr. Tierno has done extensive research on the microbiology and ecology of toxic shock syndrome, as well as the microbiology of AIDS patients. He's also studied global perspectives on infectious diseases and national issues such as hospital infections and the effectiveness of germicidal agents on microbes. Currently his research is focused on human microgenomics: the core human microbiome in health and disease.
Dr. Tierno's articles have been published in the American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Lancet, Reviews of Infectious Diseases, JAMA and Journal of Infectious Diseases, among others.
He is the author of The Secret Life of Germs (Simon & Schuster; Jan 2004 and Oct. 2001), Protect Yourself Against Bioterrorism, (Simon & Schuster; Jan. 2002) and co-author of Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Terrorism: Emergency Response and Public Protection (CRC Press; June 2003).
He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from New York University.

Woodson C. Merrell, MD, Sc.D (hc) is Chairman of the Department of Integrative Medicine at New York's Beth Israel Medical Center (BIMC), Manhattan campus of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is assistant clinical professor of medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also the M. Anthony Fisher (founding) Director of Integrative Medicine at the Continuum Center for Health & Healing (CCHH), which is an outpatient center of BIMC. CCHH is the nation's largest and most comprehensive academic integrative medical center and is dedicated to providing the highest quality clinical care, education and research on conventional medicine, complementary/ alternative medicine and indigenous medical traditions.
Dr. Merrell has been in private practice in integrative internal medicine since 1985 in New York City. He is an attending physician in the Departments of Medicine at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Centers. He has expertise and special interests in mind-body therapies (especially yoga, qi gong, and meditation), acupuncture, botanical therapies, nutrition and nutraceuticals, homeopathy and indigenous healing systems (particularly Tibetan and Chinese medicine).
Dr. Merrell has testified multiple times on integrative medicine for both Houses of Congress, as well as before New York City and New York State agencies. He has served as Chairman of New York State's Board of Acupuncture, and since 1995 has been a Board Member of New York State's Office of Professional Medical Conduct as an expert on integrative medicine. He has served on the Executive, Steering and Policy Committees of the National Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine.
Dr. Merrell has lectured extensively to both consumer and professional groups on integrative medicine and the nature of healing and wellness. He has chaired and been on the scientific advisory board of many professional conferences, including Tibetan Medicine, Native American Medicine, annual Integrative Healthcare Symposia, and Nutritional Therapeutics.

Dr. Richard Kingston has been a member of the Airborne Medical Advisory Board since 2007 providing a broad professional experience in the areas of clinical toxicology and pharmacology, poison control, product post-market surveillance, drug and dietary supplement safety, and academic medicine.
Dr. Kingston is President, Regulatory and Scientific Affairs for SafetyCall International, a multidisciplinary medical practice and poison center focused on corporate postmarket surveillance and product safety for drugs, dietary supplements and consumer products.
His academic career spans more than 30 years during which time he attained the rank of full Professor in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and currently serves as Clinical Professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. At the University of Minnesota, he is course director for 'Therapeutics of Herbs and Other Natural Medicinals' and has served as a member of the University's 'Center for Plants and Human Health' and the NCCAM-funded 'Center for Spirituality and Healing.'
Previously, Dr. Kingston served as co-founder and Director of the Minnesota Regional Poison Center and its affiliated industry toxicology programs at St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center, a university-affiliated Level One Trauma Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Over the years, he has helped shape national product safety policy on rules, regulations and law interpretation by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Kingston is the author or co-author of 40 scientific abstracts, 20 publications, 18 confidential peer-reviewed technical white papers and three textbook chapters. He is co-editor of the recently published Herbal Products Toxicology and Clinical Pharmacology Second Edition published by Humana Press. He is a frequent invited lecturer and/or visiting professor and has delivered more than 200 presentations in national or international venues. He serves on numerous scientific panels, advisory boards and non-profit professional organization scientific committees advising on issues of product- related stewardship, science and safety.
Dr. Kingston earned his B.S. in Pharmacy at the University of New Mexico, his Doctorate in Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota and completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in clinical toxicology and pharmacokinetics at St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center and the University of Minnesota.
